We have used John Pires for a corporate branding shoot, team profiles and also for property photography. He is a talented photographer who does a great job at helping people feel at ease and you can tell he puts a lot of thought and work into understanding your professional story – your brand message – so that his work captures the essence of who you are as a person and business. The property photography that we had him do was exceptional, and we use those shots in our business branding. Another professional photographer had photographed the property previously, but the difference in John’s photos is a perfect example of how not all photographers are equal. The difference really was amazing! We highly recommend John for all corporate and property photography work. Thanks John for all you do for us! Heather Jopson, Beyond Property Management.

How to Take Professional Business Headshots

  1. Remember the focus of a headshot is YOU, so make sure there are no distracting elements.
  2. Keep the background simple and ideally out of focus so that again, the focus remains on YOU. Make sure there are no signs, posts or trees that appear to be stuck to your head!
  3. Smile, but make that smile natural and real – the whole of your face should smile, not just your mouth.
  4. Practice with a mirror to get that smile right!
  5. Think about including just ONE, and only one addition that reflects your personality and makes you who you are – a unique personality. Consider your jewellery or your make-up. Maybe you have a favourite tie or scarf you always wear?
  6. Don’t try to alter your appearance. You need to be recognisable when you meet people face-to-face. The last thing you want is to give the impression you’re not genuine.
  7. Avoid all of these: busy patterns, all-black and all-white clothes, plunging necklines, bare skin. Choose a colour that reflects the industry you work in. for example, blue is often used in the finance sector. If you’re going for a particular job, consider wearing a colour that matches the company’s brand – it’s a subtle way to build a connection.

What is Personal Branding?

In our competitive business world everyone needs to establish their niche. When You, the person you know best, can merge naturally with the image you need to present to your ideal client, you will have created something truly unique. This is fundamental to your building your niche.

This is the purpose of the Personal Brand. And it’s what I set out to capture on film.

Remember that a business identity (logo, slogan etc.) may not be enough to establish that vital niche. It is unlikely to be enough to separate you from your competitors.

So I encourage you to invest in a Personal Brand Shoot which gives you all the shots you need, including photos for:

  • your website
  • social media
  • print media
  • signage.
